After much anticipation, The Villenttes are releasing their debut album titled 'lady luck'. We talked to the girls on the eve of their big night to get an insight on whats in store at whats to be the biggest zombie hoedown of the year. Maybe ever.
For those who don’t know you, how would you describe The Villenettes? . Like The Shangri Las jamming with The Ramones, with Poison Ivy on guitar. Rum and recklessness. . . Does each Villenette have their own persona that they bring to the band? . Anna: I'm the one that stomps around the stage staring people down with crazy big eyes. As soon as I'm in my Villenette attire and the first chord is struck, I become a little scary and a little kooky/goofy all at the same time . Kylie: I’m known as the short cute one who jumps around a lot and has the odd wardrobe malfunction. Jess pulls the best guitar faces and can drink the rest of the band under the table. She also has the most blood-curdling scream. On stage Clair is super tough but secretly she's the sweetheart of the band, she looks after us! . . Who would The Villenettes arch nemesis be? . The person who drank the last drop of our rum. . . What was the draw to record the album interstate? . Our good friends The Reprobettes, who are coming over for the launch, recorded at Head Gap with Mick Baty from Off The Hip and we loved how their album sounded, so we figured it’d be a good idea to head over there too. . . Would you encourage other SA bands to consider recording their music interstate? . We only recorded interstate as we had a particular sound in mind and had a good recommendation to go on. It was fun going on a band trip to record, but it was expensive. There’s plenty of talented people here in SA to record with too; we will be recording locally next time. So definitely try and keep it local if you can! . . Rip It Up did a cheeky online exclusive of Lady Luck in full, how has the reception been so far? . Great! People are really digging it, which is so exciting. . . Your live shows have been known to turn into quite the reckless party. Will there be plenty of whiskey on stage to mark this special occasion? . Yes. We’re turning the stage into a Lady Luck’s, a honky tonk western saloon, and so we’ll be forced to drink lots of rum and beer to make it authentic. . . Any other tricks up your sleeves for the big night? . Miss Madeline DeVille is performing a special devilish burlesque! The whole thing will be a western zombie mash up so who knows what could happen. Elvis might even make an appearance. . . You can soon cross ‘release debut album’ off of the list for 2015. What do you have planned for the rest of the year? . We’ll be touring the album to Melbourne (March 13, Luwow) and Ballarat (March 14, Karova Lounge) then again in April to Sydney, Canberra and Newcastle. We’ll be having a little holiday then getting right back into it to write and record some new songs for y’all. . . And of course, what local acts are each of you listening to and who are your hot tips to watch this year? . There’s so many rad acts around at the moment. Watch out for Max Savage & The False Idols, Hightime, Fresh Kills, Hydromedusa, Battlehounds, and It’s A Hoax. And... The Aves, Sloe Ruin and Babes are Wolves (our other bands!)
