After welcoming Pacificana to Arcade Lane on its opening night, it only seemed natural to attend the closing night of Mad March.
Words by Courtney Duka
A love child event between Young Muscle and Fourwords was inevitable given a shared member and general bromance between the two groups. Kudos to both collectives for bringing the Adelaide CBD laneway to life, although the last night went off with a fizzle rather than a bang.
Locals It’s A Hoax opened the night and were fine group of musicians that knew their way around their respective instruments. Singer Kiah Lanagan was quite awkward to watch on stage at times with her timid stage presence but the vocals were spot on, occasionally letting out a mean shrill.
Horror My Friend followed and the night turned for the worst – on no part of Horror My Friend’s. The trio’s new tracks have allowed front men Tom Gordon and Josh Battersby to switch roles mid-set between guitar and lead vocals to bass and back-ups. It introduces a great diversity to the set and insight into where the new album might be going, which we love. Unfortunately, frequent blackouts and small power shortages were noticeable and uncomfortable. With a mere 3 songs in, before Gordon and Battersby could exchange vocal duties, the guitar amp blew bringing the set to an abrupt end.
The Pacificana crowd had generously packed into the laneway by this stage and punters made themselves comfortable in the hope that Harts would take to the stage. Luckily, It’s A Hoax came to the rescue with a spare guitar amp, which brought Harts to life.
Darren Hart AKA Harts is absolutely bringing sexy back to electric guitar. He has the look, the attitude and best of all, the talent that had the packed crowd groovin’. The minor technical hiccups returned, causing Hart’s guitar to burst in and out of action, but it was clear it wasn’t the amp that was an issue. Pushing through, a clearly frustrated (and rightly so) Harts managed to make it through the set and of course, play the namesake track of the tour ‘Breakthrough’.
See you next year Arcade Lane!
