So festival time is officially over in Adelaide. It’s both a good thing and a bad thing. It’s good because you finally have time to rest, save and have a nap without feeling guilty that you’re missing something important. It’s bad because, well, what is there to do now?
Words by Anthony Nocera
The answer is a clear and emphatic one: ‘Groovin the Moo, you cretin!’
Taking over Oakbank Racecourse for the second year now, Groovin has dropped an awesome lineup featuring some huge international names including the legendary Peaches (*swoons* *cries*), Charli XCX (*booms/claps*) and You Me at Six (*runs from screaming teenage girl fans and hides for the rest of the day -probably at the bar*). But the bill is loaded with some amazing local acts that you really need to make sure you see on the day.
Added to the bill yesterday via the Triple J Unearthed comp, local act Timberwolf AKA Chris P is a must see. Get in early and support this guy.
This South Aussie rapper has been killing it over the last few years and is set to get everyone dancing at GTM. Having recently filled in for Lykke Li at Laneway, Maidza has kicked nothing but goals since the release of her debut EP Switch Tape (featuring Hottest 100 fodder ‘Switch Lanes’) and, her most recent single ‘M.O.B’, which proves that she can blend her rapid-fire flow with a pop/electronic sensibility that rivals that stands up to the best rappers in the game right now.
With a now entirely sold-out gig at Jive in April (and tour for that matter), GTM is the perfect chance to see her before she officially blows up in 2015.
Like Tkay, DMA’s are set for a huge 2015 and this may be your last chance to see them before they absolutely explode. These Sydneysiders have been making poignant alt-rock that hits all the right marks, with hits like ‘Delete’ and the energetic ‘Laced’ already under their belt, GTM will be Australia’s last time to see them before they head to the UK to play Leeds and Reading Festivals.
See them just for the ‘I knew them before they were famous’ cred.
Flight Facilities were the band that everyone wanted to see at Laneway, but many didn’t because of clashes. Everyone reassured themselves that they’d ‘tour again’ so it wasn’t a complete loss. GTM is that second chance. Having released what is hands-down one of the best albums of 2014 with Down to Earth, Flight Facilities have just the right amount of camp and fun, as well some seriously brilliant tracks (the album’s title track is out of the world good) to make GTM memorable. I’m banking on them being headliners and bringing a very serious production to the festival. This will be one to remember (pending no clashes).
From her hauntingly trippy cover of the Bill Withers classic Grandma’s Hands, to the jazzy pop gem Roll Up Your Sleeves to that ridiculously amazing cover of Bridges (which is pretty much better than the original, sorry Broods (who are also on the bill)), Meg Mac is all soul and serious vocal chops, and is set to deliver a performance that promises to be pretty damn magical and incredibly intimate.
Fingers crossed for a timeslot at sundown.
THE DELTA RIGGS
Dropping one of the most fun and solid rock albums of 2014, The Delta Riggs look like they could be the most fun set of the day. Having toured with Foo Fighters and Kasabian, The Delta Riggs are a band that deserves every bit of hype surrounding them (note, that Triple J feature album). With a psychedelic vibe that sounds like a cross between West Ryder Lunatic Asylum Kasabian (aka Kasabian at their very best) crossed with Tame Impala but with a little more studio fuzz.
