They say bad things come in threes. Well apparently so do really good things! Single launches from three incredibly talented local and Victorian acts, to be exact. The evening was a journey to say the least.

It began with the raw and earthy sounds of Packwood. If you close your eyes and envision yourself surrounded by nature – maybe in a forest with a lake, or in a valley, whatever tickles your fancy, as long as it’s calming – and, I kid you not, that’s what Packwood sounds like. And rightly so! “All Smoke Must Find It’s Way Home” comes from ‘Autumnal’, the first of four instalments of ‘Vertumnus’. Each part of the project is reflective of a season, and there were certainly elements of autumn in Packwood’s performance; from the sound to the way he was dressed. For a while I was even convinced that the fairy lights were fireflies. There’s something beautifully simplistic and raw about a voice with a guitar from the 1930’s carrying a piece, with two accompanying vocalists and a trio of strings.
Similar raw, earthy sounds were continued with a side of oomph when the second act of the night came out. When Tom West walks on to the stage, you can’t help but think: “if his musical ability is anything like his beard growing ability, then I’m in for a treat”. You’d be absolutely correct in thinking that and you certainly are in for a treat. His sounds take you to the beach. While it’s calming music, there are elements of the raging winds and waves that bring another level of emotion. Give “Easy, Love” a listen and you’ll know what I mean.
Oliver’s Army stepped the energy levels up another notch. There were literally crazy fun vibes flying off the stage and ricocheting all over the place. It was hard to stay still. If you ever need to flail – an Oliver’s Army gig is where you should be. The particular single they were releasing, however, did bring in a more mellow flavour in line with the previous acts. “Liquor Store” was written by front man, Ryan Oliver, as a tribute to his father. It was truly touching to be there for its release while he was able to share it with many of his friends, family and fans in the audience.
Incredible and beautiful singles, the lot of them!
