Interview by Morgan Sette
Flower Party is back this year and promises to deliver more music, more flowers and more party. Morgan had a chat to Jimmy from Jimmy & The Mirrors about what it’s all about and why people should be heading down to what will be a mix of a festival, warehouse party and a botanist’s dream.
What is Flower Party? Give us the spiel.
Flower Party is the world's greatest Flower themed music festival. Queen's Theatre is set to get super pollinated with 1000s of flowers, lighting displays, arts pieces and other floral creations. But it's not all flowers, we also program some of the best South Australian musicians to perform on the night. This year we have Jesse Davidson, Surahn, Delia Obst, Bearded Gypsy Band, Ollie English, Sleepy Lizard and us, Jimmy & The Mirrors!
Why the flower theme?
Flowers make you feel good. Music makes you feel good. The two go hand in hand!
No, I'll tell you the full story. It all started about 7 years ago when we did the first flower party. Jimmy & The Mirrors had only been playing for a couple of years and we needed a gimmick to try and get people through the door. So somebody in the band said, "How about a Flower Party? People love flowers!" Personally, I thought it was the stupidest idea I'd ever heard. But then it took on a life of its own. We decked the venue out in flowers, got a couple of face painters and the night was a huge success. Soon we were doing Flower Parties every year and they kept getting bigger, more colourful and more floral!
You've got a mix of people here, Surahn and Jesse are a little more dance, Delia is pretty soft acoustic. Tell me about the acts and why they're involved.
Well you might notice that all of the acts are South Australian. There are so many amazing bands in South Australia but we are lacking in homegrown festivals to showcase these acts. We thought that each of these acts would fit the fun loving vibe of the night. They were all also super keen to wear colourful shirts and get super fruity!
Jimmy & The Mirrors haven't played in a while, neither have Bearded Gypsy Band. Are you reuniting just for Flower Party?
Jimmy & The Mirrors are indeed reuniting just for Flower Party! We've all been playing together in a few different projects over the years, but we haven't actually played together as Jimmy & The Mirrors. That being said, we've had a few rehearsals and they've been awesome. We're playing with a full horn and string section as well, so expect the big band experience. As for Bearded Gypsy Band, they're some of the hottest musicians in town so I can understand why they've been so busy lately with other musical projects.
What's going to be different to previous years? What can we expect?
It might sound cliché, but this year is going to be the most floral festival you will ever see. Expect a cross between WOMAD and Burning Man Festival. Aside from the awesome live music program, we've got a group called the Smasheltek Creationship who have constructed these huge Flower lighting displays. Body painters and face painters are going to be keeping everyone super colourful. The Flower Power Fashion Parade is scheduled to find the Flower Party King and Queen. We've also got a few secret arts pieces from local artists and musicians taking place throughout the night. It's all going to be really weird and wonderful.
Do we have to dress up?
Yes! Get floral! You will feel like a dork if you're not!
