Review by Henry Sawbridge
So it’s my first review for YEWTH. And I'm late to the gig. Too many beers. Fuck.
However it's all gravy, GANZ has only just come on and Fat Controller is PUMPING. The venue is packed, the d-floor even more so (I could barely keep myself upright due to the waves of movement coming from the crowd) and the first beer there was delicious.
The set looked like it was off to a solid start, however even I wasn't prepared for the absolute onslaught of trap and hip-hop he was throwing down from the get go. The set was heaving with deep 808’s as GANZ worked his way through some of his back catalogue with stand outs being his Alison Wonderland flip of ‘I Want U’ as well as ‘Pvrple Forrest’ and some of his Dino EP, but I really was expecting a more laid-back set. Expecting it, but by no means mad at it, he was playing big tunes to a big audience and we were all vibing it.
Once warmed up with the crowd GANZ played his latest and arguably biggest release ‘GAOBEAR’ that surprisingly, by no fault of his own, let the set down the most. The let down being that the majority of the crowd did not react with it at all, arguably because they hadn’t heard it before or were vibin’ the more dance-inducing tracks before it. Mixing out the track half way through was a let down for the fans there to see his most recent material (we got ‘Lone’ later though, so rectified). ‘GAOBEAR’ although not given a full run was quickly replaced with some huge anthems from the last 5 years including the likes of TNGHT’s ‘Goooo’ and Higher Ground’ as well as the recent ‘Alexander Lewis’ flip of Mr Carmack’s ‘Pay for What’, which left an unexpected crowd sweating bullets after experiencing that through the Fat Man’s sound system.
The only other complaint of the night would be towards the MC who felt the need to talk a bunch of lame hype shit over the headline set which was stand-alone hype enough. I've seen much worse MCs and maybe I'm just bitter towards them in general especially when a good set speaks for itself, so I went and got another beer. Well, I tried to. Until GANZ decides to throw down RL Grime’s ‘Core’, which by now, even if you are not a fan of trap, you’ll drunkenly gtf down to every time. Which was most definitely the case as a minute into a roomful of punters yelling their best ‘OOOhhhhooooHHHOOOOOO’ on the first drop, he “wound that shit back” and replayed it in its entirety to 99% of the rooms delight.
I was most definitely not in the 1% i fuckin' lose my shit to that tune err’time.
GANZ @ Fat Controller, ⅘ don't have that last beer before getting to the gig next time.
