Words by Courtney Duka
Its that time of year again when local and international industry figures and music lovers gather in Fortitude Valley for Australia's biggest music conference, BIGSOUND. The nation puts its best foot forward in music to showcase the "next big things" and find out who our buzz bands are.
Before we dive in for the marathon of panels, live music and all those un-official parties, we asked some of Adelaide's showcasing bands and key industry peeps to share with us who to check out.
See you all on the other side.
(Sparkspitter play Woolly Mammoth, Wed 7th Sep, 9pm)
FORTUNES and SAMPA THE GREAT: Both doing huge things for the future of Australian hip hop.
100% and BEC SANDRIDGE: Crispy, keen to get lost in a Bladerunner meets David Bowie dancefloor dreamscape with these legends.
KUKA, GAWURRA, LEAH SENIOR and RAINBOW CHAN: They're all just really great and making really great music and we like them.
Plus all the love for the other fellow South Australians flying the flag this year - WTBP, LUKE MILLION, TKAY (shit is it really only three? Did we miss anyone??). GO SEE THEM!
Finally, the keynotes from KIM GORDAN and PB WOLF will definitely be worth getting in front of!
SOSEFINA FUAMOLI - THE AU REVIEW
Not ~technically~ an official BIGSOUND artist, but the duo are playing some shows as part of the MusicNT delegation coming to Brisbane. I saw them when I was in Darwin in July and they friggin' blew my mind. Energetic, incredibly charming and fiercely talented stage performers.
The first time I met Ecca was at BIGSOUND 2014 and the rest was history (<3) - but for real, in such a short period of time, she's shot up to become one of the country's best new artists touring and what I've loved about her game is that it hasn't been compromised, stylistically, musically or otherwise as the hype surrounding her music has continued to swell. A true individual and a surefire highlight of the festival this year.
The Melbourne based rapper is one of the Bad Apples crew and as we've seen already this year, this is a label that is nuturuing the careers of some of this country's best emerging hip hop talent. I've been waiting to see Birdz throw it down for some time now, high on my list for this week for sure.
HIDEOUS SUN DEMON:
YouTube "Oscillate". One of my favourite tracks of this year. Hideous Sun Demon come to BIGSOUND representing for Perth and they've been earning solid reviews for a strong live show to follow on from some quality releases so far. Pencil them in.
The best new band out of Melbourne if a fusion of dark, seductive pop and low-fi soul stuff if is your bag. Grab a drink and let the trio twist up your feelings.
CRAIG LOCK - 5/4 ENTERTAINMENT
WEST THEBARTON BROTHEL PARTY
(WTBP play Empire, Thursday 8th Sep, 9:40pm)
A.B. ORIGINAL KEYNOTE: A keynote from two of Australia's most fierce (Conference time 2pm Thursday)
FLYING NUN & CHAPTER MUSIC: Labels representing some of my faves of old and new (Conference time 2pm Wednesday)
KIM GORDAN KEYNOTE: Except our guitarist Tom Gordon is stealing all our spots to see his iconic surnamesake open proceedings. (Conference time 10am Wednesday)
CONTENT OVERLOAD: HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH?: Promises to be a relevant discussion, potentially with the aim of getting people refocused back on the music at the heart of all this. (Conference time 2pm Wednesday)
FESTIVAL TRUTHS: The evolving culture surrounding the Australian festival circuit is changing and this discussion is pretty necessary in interrogating how the industry can best continue to provide the kind of life shaping festival experiences I and many others have been blessed with in our teens and young adulthood. (Conference time 3:35pm Wednesday)
