YEWTH has teamed up with the City of Onkaparinga to run a competition to design a t-shirt for National Youth Week 2017!

The winner will receive $500 worth of printing and start-up materials as well as having your design live screen printed at the festival and available for purchase. After this you will have the opportunity to design another tee which will also be stocked with local retailers Created Range, Urban Cow Studio, Da Klinic, MV2 and The Sliding Door Surf Shop.

Finally you will receive six mentoring sessions with our own creative director, Dave Court. In addition to working at YEWTH Dave runs the independent store Created Range in Regent Arcade and his own clothing label foolsandtrolls.

You must be under 25 to enter and the first design to be live printed at the National Youth Week Festival must be based on the theme of REGENERATION, but do not let that scare you away. I spoke to Dave about his advice for entrants and he said to first have a look at a variety of t-shirts, art, and other designs. You could even take a look in at the five stores that will be stocking the winning design to see the work of artists it will be stocked alongside.

Try and make something unique and new. It doesn’t need to be complex to be interesting. It doesn’t need to be too directly related to the theme ‘regeneration’, be inventive with the connection.

Dave has five years of experience in tee design and will be able to answer the questions you have about starting out and give advice on where the you want to take your ideas from there. He will be able to point you in the right direction, make connections, and help to avoid the same mistakes and missteps he took in reaching the point he is at nowdesigning, printing, making, and selling clothing.

It took me almost 2 years to make the right connections and get to a point that I was able to have my tees sold in one or two stores, so to be guaranteed stocking and exposure in five stores straight up with your first tee design is massive.

Entries close at midnight on March 19th and the winner will be revealed on March 31st at the City of Onkaparinga National Youth Week Festival.
