Split Singles Club is a subscription service that allows members to have a 7” vinyl delivered to their door fortnightly, with brand new tracks from the label’s artists on each side of the record.
Thus far we’ve seen releases from bands including hypnotic rockers Cable Ties, Jade Imagine, Hachiku, and bandmate of Courtney Barnett, Dave Mudie’s solo project LA Mood.
Whilst over in Melbourne we attended the Split Singles Launch Show at the intimate venue of the Curtin Hotel on Lygon Street, Fitzroy. I caught up with Jen Cloher of Milk! Who gave me the rundown on the project. She described the vibe of the releases as ‘down to earth’ in style, giving the listener a sense of the artist’s everyday lives in Australia across the six split singles.
"All of the artwork for each release is beautifully screen printed by Steph Hughes," she says. “As well as the vinyl release, a digital download is also sent out via email”.
Joe Alexander, main man of Bedroom Suck (whose bedroom must suck), developed the initial idea behind the vinyl based project. "I've been wanting to do this for a long time and this has finally become reality by collaborating with Milk!," he says.
The launch night saw performances from a selection of artists releasing new material as part of the project. Personal favourite, Lehman B. Smith blasted the audience with tight drum beats and mellow flute-work across a series of smile inducing pop-rock tracks.
Brizzy psych rockers Blank Realm wrapped up the night to a crowd that grew progressively wilder.
Split Singles Club will finish up with a final release featuring Courtney Barnett on the A side and Blank Realm on the B. If you’re feeling sneaky you can catch a peak of Blank Realm’s track on the highlights video of the Split Singles launch night, up on the Milk! Facebook and Insta.
