Thursday night saw an eclectic, diverse crowd of Fringe fanatics flock to Royal Croquet Club for a flex and stretch warm-up for another big weekend of festivities with legend of UK Electronic “Trip-hop” DJ George Evelyn aka Nightmares On Wax.
Local favourite beat-maker Oisima teamed up with Troy J Been to serve up a delicious entrée of soothing synth and hip-hop beats. With stunning psychedelic visuals lighting up the stage, the duo had the growing crowd mesmerised as they each took to the decks. The locals delivered the ideal sets to warm a crowd for a dance and providing a peaceful ambience for Thursday night knock-off drinks.
Nightmares On Wax dazzled his first-ever Adelaide crowd with classic 90’s electronic/house sound, characterised by beefy beats, analogue disc-scratching, harmonic instrumentals and unique voice samples. Evelyn’s stage presence was cool and aloof, opening with a “Feel free, feel good, feel happy” before launching into his set. Despite being a set clearly tailored for a younger crowd with samples from Major Lazer’s “Get Free”, the Leeds-born, Ibiza-based artist still satisfied the diehard fans of his earlier works with a truly funky show. Tracks from 90’s favourites Carboot Soul and Smoker’s Delight were intertwined with his newer works for a show that had the whole crowd movin’ and groovin’. Finishing up with the timeless, ever-funky, crowd-pleaser “You Wish” and a polite wave and thank you, it is clear why Nightmares on Wax continues to make his mark on the scene.
